IF – Stripes

IF – Stripes

Posted on Friday, November 4th, 2011 under Sketches | 1 comment

I drew my entry for this week's Illustration Friday at Starbucks, on a wooden table, while enjoying the lovely winter breeze. Perfection.

Here's the poem:

Peace is obtainable,
but only through Love.

Love is easy,
But it requires Acceptance & Joy.

IF – Journey

My submission for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "journey". Simple weaving fun as a little bit of vector laid over the top of some plaster wall.

IF – Surrender

IF – Surrender

Posted on Saturday, January 29th, 2011 under Sketches | 1 comment

My submission for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "surrender" ... a generalized native, alone on the plain, facing defeat and necessary surrender.

I used everyone's new favorite digital sketch app, SketchBookExpress (thanks to the free download on Apple's Mac Store) for the initial version, then adjusted and refined the colors in Photoshop using Smart Adjustment layers.

You can view the largest version on Flickr here.

IF – Sneaky

IF – Sneaky

Posted on Monday, November 22nd, 2010 under Sketches | No comments

On Friday night, I couldn't sleep so I worked up this sneaky sneaky vector for IllustrationFriday's theme of ... you guessed it, "sneaky". He is entirely made of simple objects I drew with the Shape tool, minus the wily mustache; I used Illustrator's new and great variable Width tool to create that.

IF – Burning

IF – Burning

Posted on Friday, November 12th, 2010 under Sketches | No comments

A simple vector flame ... I first saw this in my head pretty much folded and flicking just like it is here, then put it down on paper with blue pencil and pen. I grabbed a snap of it with my iPhone 4, pushed the photo to Dropbox and then redrew the basic shape in Adobe Illustrator. I think I've finally got the hang of the wonky Gradient tool, so the coloring went pretty quickly.

I ...

IF – Spooky

Sometimes we get carried away with our costumes and sometimes ... they carry us away. Sadly, it's an epidemic that claims more kiddy trick-or-treaters each year than stale circus peanut poisonings. Do your part to save the children; add an escape hatch level to every costume BEFORE they leave the house.

Cue "The More You Know" music, please Jerry ...

IF – Artificial

IF – Artificial

Posted on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 under Sketches | 1 comment

A quick sketch entry that I did for last friday's Illustration Friday theme of "artificial". For me the word equaled something robot-y, so here you go.

I have always loved the winged mech style of everything Gundam (though I have still to watch much of the apparently 30+ years of the show), so that is why I was trying for something a bit angular with this. It's a bit of a departure from my usual monster ...

IF : Satellite

IF : Satellite

Posted on Saturday, June 26th, 2010 under Sketches | No comments

My simple entry into this week's IllustrationFriday theme of "satellite" ... just my thumbs and Adobe's fantastic (and vector-based) Ideas iPhone app. Oh yeah ... my new iPhone 4 and its gorgeous screen were there too. ;)

The standard Brushes iPhone app does have a lot on Adobe's first entry into the space (i.e. progressive playback, shortcut corners, undo AND redo buttons, multiple layers, etc.), but the fact that I can output a vector file (email-able ...

IF – Early

IF – Early

Posted on Friday, May 21st, 2010 under Design Sketches | No comments

Staying out with "the boys" the last couple of nights has made my alarms (I had to set three ... my watch, my iPhone and the nightstand one) sound so loud and seem so early lately. At some point, I need to find some sleep ... but for now, I am definitely enjoying playing catch up with work and spending so much time out with people I really enjoy.

This is a simple vector piece made ...

IF – Ahead

IF – Ahead

Posted on Monday, April 26th, 2010 under Design Downloads | 1 comment

My entry for this past Illustration Friday topic of "ahead" actually comes in a couple of parts. I initially started out with idea of creating a typeface to demonstrate the word, but ended up being distracted by the minutia of the lowercase letters not matching up to what I liked about the uppercase letters. I eventually took the letters I did like and worked up the vector illustration you see here.

IF – Linked

IF – Linked

Posted on Friday, April 9th, 2010 under Sketches | 1 comment

My entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "linked" ... a simple sketch in Illustrator. I had planned to color this, but I haven't been using the Blob Brush as much I as I usually do as of late and it took longer than I wanted to get to this point. I might color it later on, but more than likely, it will stay in this pretty pre-pro state.

I thought these guys looked kinda ...

IF : Dip

IF : Dip

Posted on Friday, April 2nd, 2010 under Life Sketches | 2 comments

Here is my entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "dip" ... it goes out to my wife, Jodie, who is convinced the time is right for swimming, sun-ing and in general heading to the beach. I say it's still spring.

This is all vector, mixing some Brush strokes, the Blob Brush, the new (but still lame) in-line Gradient tool and a tad bit of Illustrator's Raster Effects thrown in for fun.

IF : Expired

IF : Expired

Posted on Friday, March 19th, 2010 under Sketches | 1 comment

My entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "expired". I think this started out as me yet again trying to work up a propaganda-style poster (hence the color palette), but almost immediately realizing I don't have the right mindset for it. Instead, I spent some time getting more acquainted with Illustrator CS4's much-improved-but-still-goofy inline Gradient editor.

I guess the only thoughts behind the IF tie-in are for you to think of expired milk. If you ...

IF : Muddy

IF : Muddy

Posted on Monday, February 8th, 2010 under Sketches | 1 comment

My entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "muddy" is pretty simple ... just some fun feet splashing in the mud. Since I haven't been carrying my sketchbook with me the last few weeks, I drew this as a quick sketch right in Illustrator, refined it here and then added a tiny bit of highlighting in Photoshop.

IF : Focused

IF : Focused

Posted on Friday, February 5th, 2010 under Sketches | 1 comment

My entry for last week's Illustration Friday theme of "focused". Even though I drew it early on Friday night, I totally spaced on uploading it. Let's see if I can still make the deadline ...

Oh and it's actually a good mix of a bunch of different pens. A little Crayola marker, a bit of Black India Ink and Windex and just a touch of White-Out.

IF : Wilderness

IF : Wilderness

Posted on Thursday, January 21st, 2010 under Sketches | 3 comments

This is my entry for last week's Illustration Friday theme of "wilderness". I did draw it on Friday, but have been so busy with other thing meaningless online things (and a bit o' work) I almost forgot to upload it ... eep!

I drew this on the back of some glossy insert that I found in one of my Terminator DVD cases. No pencils necessary ... just straight to some nice black medium Sharpie. I don't ...

IF – Renewal

Posted on Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 under Sketches | No comments

My first Illustration Friday entry of the year and my first ever ambigram! That's right ... flip it over and it reads the same :) If you've never looked into them before, there are some really amazing ambrigram logos and designers out there.

Since it was my first ambigram, it took a while to get right. I drew it on paper 3 times, then re-did it in Illustrator about 10 times. It still isn't perfect, but ...

IF : Undone

Posted on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 under Sketches | No comments

My sketch entry for last week's Illustration Friday theme of "undone". I had a lot of fun drawing with this one at my parents' place in Pompano on Friday and am really tempted to make a cleaner, tighter vector version (especially with all of the suggestions that Joey made) ... but I am wondering if it would be worth the time spent and what I would do (if anything) with it afterwards ... hmmm.

IF : Crunchy

Posted on Friday, December 4th, 2009 under Sketches | 5 comments

Here is my submission to this week's Illustration Friday theme of "crunchy". Nothing too fancy ... just having some fun.

I know it has been a while since I have posted anything longer than 140 characters, but hopefully you have been enjoying all of the 30 minute illustrations and they make up for a homepage full of tweets. They do ... right??

IF : Blur

Posted on Friday, November 6th, 2009 under Design | No comments

I decided that for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "blur" I would make this pretty Mac icon ... one, because it has been a while since I made an icon and I miss all 262,144 of those pixels and two, because when I think of blurred things, I immediately think the fuzzy color circles I see at night when I am not wearing my glasses or contacts.

I started with some shapes in Illustrator and ...

IF : Skinny

My simple and fun entry for tonight's Illustration Friday theme of "skinny" ... mainly just me playing around with simple shapes and vectors. Enjoy!

IF : Frozen (Felix)

Posted on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 under Sketches Video | No comments

Since I didn't have a Wacom tablet around, my daily person drawing (and coincidentally my Illustration Friday entry) was done in the great Brushes iPhone app.

IF: Modify

My simple entry into this week's kinda weak Illustration Friday topic of "modify". A couple of versions on paper and tracing then a quick work up in Photoshop.

Poise Desktop

Since Kane was asking about it, I went ahead and created a desktop version of the Poise piece, in a variety of sizes. Visit the downloads section to get at 'em.

IF : Poise

Posted on Friday, March 27th, 2009 under Sketches | No comments

Since IF’s “Brianna” decided (so unnecessarily) it was important to remind us all what “poise” means, I thought I would have a little fun with this week’s Illustration Friday theme. That’ll show ‘em!On a side note, I really enjoy coming back every now and then and using the fun lil’ free vector app, Rita … even though the UI is ugly, there is just something about it’s simplicity and the way it works with my ...
