IF – Passion

IF – Passion

Posted on Friday, January 23rd, 2015 under Life Sketches | No comments

Ugh. It has been a while ... between the new move and working to improve my effectiveness at answering student emails and submitting grades, I haven't put pen to paper for any purpose in a few weeks.

On top of that, I haven't worked on a Illustration Friday challenge in a good long while. This is pencil, calligraphy and Kuretake pens on a heavy lb paper and really the point of it wasn't so much message ...

IF : Wilderness

IF : Wilderness

Posted on Thursday, January 21st, 2010 under Sketches | 3 comments

This is my entry for last week's Illustration Friday theme of "wilderness". I did draw it on Friday, but have been so busy with other thing meaningless online things (and a bit o' work) I almost forgot to upload it ... eep!

I drew this on the back of some glossy insert that I found in one of my Terminator DVD cases. No pencils necessary ... just straight to some nice black medium Sharpie. I don't ...

CMYK Monsters

Posted on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 under Design Life | 2 comments

Thanks to an equally relaxing and productive morning, I managed to wrangled up my earlier drawing into this fun vector. It's sized just perfect for your iPhone, but I am thinking it would make for a great poster print. What do you think? Anyone got recommendations on a place to print them at? I've only ever used Cafepress, which is slightly pricey.

Although it doesn't directly relate to the drawing, this is what I read today ...

Moonlit Monster – iPhone Wallpaper

Posted on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 under Downloads Life | No comments

This has been sitting in my "to finish" folder for quite some time and now thanks to all of the daily pieces I have been working on with the Blob Brush, I finally found a style I was okay with for this something special for all you iPhone users out there. Get ready for the Halloween season by putting this little moster guy on your shiny Apple screen.

Download the full 320 × 480 size here.

October Monster

Posted on Sunday, October 4th, 2009 under News Sketches | No comments

A sneak peek of the monster I drew for this month and the upcoming revamping of the Dra Studio website. I was getting really frustrated with both all of my physical inking solutions ... my brush-tip markers were dull and I still can't get a steady flow running from the quills.

So after trying three times, I just gave up and finished this guy off in Illustrator with the nifty new blob brush.

Yeti for the iPhone

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 under Downloads News | No comments

Pretty much anytime Mel and I start talking about anything Yeti, I have to draw it. It's like I have this Himalayan fever and the only cure is letting it out with pencil, pen or Wacom stylus.

For this piece I did my typical pencil drawing, covered over with felt-tip marker and then digitized with the normal "Brush" tool in Illustrator ... but once I got to that point, I wasn't entirely happy with it. So ...

Do Work!

Posted on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 under Life Sketches | No comments

Just like all of the FCC kids that are working hard this week on finals and the last few assignments before the summer and/or graduation, I have been hard at work on freelance and Full Sail class projects. More updates to come soon, I promise ;)P.S. Shout out to Tyler for passing the Bible Comp. What what!

Golden Nuggets

Posted on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 under Sketches Writings | No comments

The other day I was spouting random seeds of wisdom, that Courtney coined “golden nuggets” … enjoy! Oh, and I hope you enjoy my friend Hurly here …Indecision leads to missed opportunity. No one will think of you as a women until you acknowledge yourself as one. What she lacks in determination, she makes up for in non-committal.Your bad choices can only lead to worst results. If God is my constant, you are the variable.Customization is the first ...

Gilbert on the iPhone

Posted on Saturday, March 28th, 2009 under Sketches Video | No comments

Gilbert Grape from Oscar Cortez on Vimeo. You can view the high-res version of the final piece here.Yesterday was such a great day … enjoyed a yummy lunch with Courtney and Jodie, fell asleep on some soft couches in IKEA and got to hang out with a bunch of old (and new!) friends, including Nathan G., Eddie, Rosie and Sarah. I drew this guy over dinner at Chick-fil-A … again, using the sweet, sweet Brushes iPhone ...

Day #27 – AAahh!

Posted on Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 under Sketches | No comments

So, I woke up this morning, fixing problems left and right and feeling good … until I realized I had double-paid one of our bills. AAaahh!!What had happened was (yes, Mom. You have to say that in a ghetto voice) … in anticipation of getting paid last Friday, I scheduled a payment in advance. Then, actually ON Friday, I made the mistake of paying the bill anyway. After several phone calls, I was able to ...

Day #26 – Face

Posted on Monday, January 26th, 2009 under Sketches | No comments

So I haven’t really been sleeping lately and it is doing wonders for my eyes and my hair … and by wonders, I of course mean I am tired and afraid to look in the mirror most nights/mornings.Oh and with this sketch, I was kinda trying to give a node to Willie Baronet’s fantastic style of clean simple lines. It really doesn’t compare to his work, but I like how it turned out overall.

Day #22 – Box

Posted on Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 under Photography Sketches | No comments

Since I got home from work late last night, I wasn’t able to pick up the extra special box Jessica sent until this morning. And since I have been hawk-edly watching the FEDEX shipping notifications for eight full days, it is no wonder I couldn’t sleep! So, you may ask … what was in the box? Well, not only did Jess send my new camera, a Canon S5 IS (EEEEeeee!!), and accessories and our new wireless ...

Day #20 – Snooze

Posted on Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 under Sketches | No comments

I have been doing lots and lots of reading lately … mostly for work, so technical things like Adobe Flex, PHP, and the like, but I have also been managing to work in some fun reading too. I am still working through Madeleine L’Engle’s fantastic Time Quartet and on the side, plenty of collected comic books (you can actually read some of my reviews/thoughts over at Matt Zeller and I’s project site).Oh, what do you ...

IF : Similar

Posted on Monday, December 8th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Found in this turmoil of evil, among the swirly of monster fur and lava-hot buzzing of robot lasers, emerges a bond; a brotherhood footed in the love of music and sleek lickable gadgetry.I did up this week’s piece, for the Illustration Friday theme of “similar”, on the back of a party plate, during the recent game night at Jean Marie Cannon’s place.

Eatin' Records

Posted on Friday, November 28th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Like every other Apple-loving kid out there, I have been absolutely adoring the fantastic playlists created by the iTunes 8 “Genius” feature. Try as I may to out-smart it with my own custom playlists, the iTunes magic music algorithms continue to put out some amazing mixes. And with all this musical goodness at my fingertips, I feel it is unfair to not share it with others … hence, I have been sending my favorite mixes to ...

IF : Sugary

Posted on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Oh the joy of yummy treats and sugary candy eats! Here is my deliciously evil entry for yesterday’s Illustration Friday theme of “sugary”.The gritty paper background is courtesy of a Google search and a great resource called CG Textures and the scrumptious scary font was the feature download this month from Nate Piekos and his amazingness.Candy, candy, candy …. aaghg!

IF : Detach

Posted on Saturday, August 16th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

IF : Detach (uploaded by DRA Studio)Here is my new entry for the Illustration Friday theme of “detach”. The line work and details are a bit more stringy and rigid from my usual rounded and smooth work, but this time around, I gave even more control to the pen I was using and let it do what it would. Since it was a muddled ballpoint ink pen, it kinda lost and regained its flow pretty ...

IF : Enough

Posted on Friday, July 18th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

IF:Enough (uploaded by DRA Studio)Okay, so it has been a full week with iPhone, and I have to say that I am still completely ecstatic about it. Between the amazing-ness that is MobileMe “push” synchronization, GPS locations and the sweet sweet App Store, it is perfectly filling in for those moments where my using Nano was not enough and my MacBook Pro was overkill. RSS reading, Flickr exploration, and podcast viewing is up by tons ...

In search of heart

Posted on Sunday, July 13th, 2008 under Sketches Writings | No comments

Pod Wall (uploaded by DRA Studio)Eric’s anxiousness to see the sketch I drew during today’s sermon inspired me to work up this piece. I went ahead and uploaded the original photo I took, in case you want to play the “Boy’s Life” game of spotting what is different. ;) Enjoy. He powers up and starts his day;a few others, in tow, follow his way.He thinks: “The day will end as the rest” “Empty, lonely … defeated, ...

IF : Tales and Legends

Posted on Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

IF : Tales and Legends (uploaded by DRA Studio)My submission into this week’s Illustration Friday theme of “Tales and Legends”. I originally had planned to create this just in Art Rage, as a fun experiment with the new version of the app, but it quickly deteriorated, as I realized I don’t like Art Rage.It is strong in some areas, and feels much like what use to be Alias’ Sketchbook, but for some reason, the blending and ...

Day 2007-12-27

Posted on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Day 2007-12-27 (uploaded by DRA Studio)Day #21 – I am really liking the lines and patterns in these pieces. The mesh-work in the bottom panel seems to have a great balance with the empty white characters within. What do you think?

Day 2007-12-26

Posted on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Day 2007-12-26 (uploaded by DRA Studio)Day #20 – These turned out a bit smaller in size, but made for plenty more nibblets of fun and joy. No, I don’t know what is going on with the “Yes” bubble. I am confused by that too.

Day 2007-12-24

Posted on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Day 2007-12-24 (uploaded by DRA Studio)Day #18 – The line-work in the far left piece makes me really happy. Plus, Wolvie getting a birthday cake makes me smile.

Day 2007-12-23

Posted on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 under Sketches | No comments

Day 2007-12-23 (uploaded by DRA Studio)Day #17 – I am really digging the kid in the cooking at, and those little ingredients are fun too.I know that “The Island” piece isn’t that strong … sadly, life-like sketches are my Achilles heel. :(

Day 2007-12-22

Posted on Saturday, December 29th, 2007 under Sketches | No comments

Day 2007-12-22 (uploaded by DRA Studio)Day #16 If the solace of life has keep you from the bread river, look deep past the snarl’s embrace. You will find that socks don’t bite and vested vestigials don’t sing. Rays of light are more for fright and less for fear.Okay, so I am back to the felt-tip brush pen and as you can see, the details are much better and the line work is cleaner. I was messing a ...
