13 May 2009Jodie just sent me these two texts:
“The RT named Vorarut just came in to check things and reminded me that Max is on the lowest setting(s) for his ventilator and the next step if they can ween him off of the respirator is called a C-pap. It is a different kind of breathing system that keeps the lungs open so there is very little effort needed to breathe.”
“Also the RT checked the machine and said Max’s ratio is 1 breath to the respirator’s 5 breaths.”
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” – Ephesians 6:10

13 May 2009“Jodie, me and almost the entire Cortez family (minus little Joey and plus Max’s Great Grandma Dolly) are here today at the hospital, taking turns seeing the little cutie.”
“His nurse from yesterday and today is Carrie, who we really like. She let us know that he is doing about the same … his oxygen is around 21-22%, which is right around what we normally breathe. His blood pressure has fluctuated a little, he is still only on dopamine at 4.”
“Jodie is excited to see that his little trigger light has been going off quite a few times today … especially when my sister Margie was with him. Seems he knows who gave us those really good cookies when she was pregnant
”
“The RN also mentioned that he did well on his eye exam this morning. He still didn’t necessarily like it, but was much less resistant than previously. She did notice some yellowish tears, but thinks this is related to the jaundice.”
“Still have so many pictures that I need to upload, but the hospital wireless is not working right now and this is where we are most of the time nowadays.”

12 May 2009Jodie is at the hospital almost all of today with Max and she just texted me the following update: “He looks a little less puffy the nurse and I think … I love this little guy! Oh he’s still only 4 on dopamine and they put his lipids back on. Nothing other than that.”

11 May 2009Spending time will little Maximillian is quickly becoming one of my favorite things to do … and with that cute nose he has, how could it not be?!

11 May 2009“Jodie, Steph and Colby are at the hospital now … baby Max is off of the dobutamine entirely and his catheter is out (so he has a diaper on). I am going to see if I can leave work early to join them soon.”

11 May 2009I just called Jodie and we spent some time talking about the upcoming ‘Family Meeting’ we are having at the hospital on Thursday at 3pm Friday at 2pm. It is for the doctors and specialists to present their findings and thoughts on little Max’s prognosis (a word I do not enjoy using, but one that is apt).
I think we both know what they will say and neither of us are expecting anything other than what God has already known and planned. It is going to be a hard day that I am already not looking forward to on the calendar … but we right now we are both smiling because of how awesome Max is, the time we are getting to spend with him and because of the promise Christ has given us in eternity.
I have been thinking some about Joshua recently …
“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” – Joshua 24:15

11 May 2009“Just talked to Max’s Resident Nurse for the day, Jody, and his condition is still the same … I think her exact words were ‘status quo’. Both his dopamine and dobutamine are low (4 and 2, respectively), but they haven’t weaned him off of any more dobutamine because his blood pressure hasn’t been consistent at the level where they want it (at an average of 45).”
“He had his abdominal ultrasound this morning and should have the results back this afternoon. One of the reasons for this ultrasound is to see what issue he is having with his liver. They suspect a problem because of him not responding to the billirubin lights (besides getting a tan) and because they had to take him off of the lipids the day before yesterday (because his levels were too high … i.e. not being processed effectively).”
“At least today and tomorrow I have to teach until 9PM and even though Colby is awesome and been available to Jodie to the hospital each day, I am sure they both would enjoy any additional visitors between now and then.”

10 May 2009Jodie got to enjoy her first Mother’s Day yesterday … and I hear Max got her some pretty roses and cute presents
Uncle Colby was nice enough to take some video of Jodie and I playing with Maximillian and as soon as I can, I will post up all of the photos we took (there are lots!).
We were at Southside on Sunday morning and this is one of the scriptures that Ron Camblin read:
“She [Hannah] said, “Oh, my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you, praying to the LORD. For this boy I prayed, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the LORD; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the LORD. And he worshiped the LORD there.” – 1 Samuel 1:26-28
I love that God brought these verses to mind yesterday:
“… You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” – Hebrews 12:1
Maximillian Alejandro Cortez arrived at 7:48 am on Thursday April 30, 2009, weighing 4 pounds 12 ounces.
He spent 14 days in the NICU at Florida Hospital South, with his mother, father & family, before heading home to Heaven. We are all very excited to see him again.
